That moment you live for

The other day held one of THOSE moments!
One of those moments you look forward to from the minute your kids are born, and certainly all through the terrible twos, and the ornery elevens (I'm sure that's a thing) and the tumultuous teens!

One of my kids relayed a conversation they had with someone else,  in which they said "the greatest thing my parents ever taught me was how to love Jesus for myself." 😭 I grabbed that kiddo in a huge hug before they could finish. LOL
Then they said  "Instead of saying how to do it, you guys modeled your love for Him."
ðŸ’— Oh my stars! That was a banner day.

If you are in one of the seasons mentioned above, just know that you will blink and they will be adults, who appreciate you and what God helped you instill in them.

The glimpses

My hubby was passionate about parenting. He poured his life into our kids and I'm so grateful!
It is a bit of a rough day for us but here's one thing that is really fun.

I get to 'see him' all the time, so to speak.
All of a sudden he 'shows up' in some of the things our kids say and do and I get a glimpse of him all over again.

I see him in their quick wit,
in their servant-hearts
 in their work ethics,
in the one who cares for the homeless and knows them by name,
in the two who will talk your ear off about theology,  LOL
 in the deep thinkers,
in how wise beyond their years they are.
In the one who can talk to anybody,
in the one who always intercedes for their coworkers,
and
in the sweet way they love, honor
and...tease me! : )

When it hurts

Prayers appreciated for my kids this weekend as they make it through their first Father's Day!
They were very blessed to have such an incredible Dad!
And he was beyond proud of each of them!

That will preach!

Whenever we went to a movie or finished viewing one at home, my Hubby would tell the kids to "Listen up" and then the kids would laugh and groan and say "Dad is gonna to preach."
And he would! -He could find a spiritual concept in anything we watched and make a teachable moment out of it.

So, when we came out of Captain America: Civil War,
recently, I stopped the kids in the lobby and told them what I knew he would've said.
But he would've taken longer to say it ; )
and been way more eloquent!

~~SPOILER ALERT if you haven't seen it yet~~

During that scene where all the super heros start fighting EACH OTHER, I was reminded of how random all their seperate powers were. You had cute, young spider man, slinging webs at everyone, and Wanda doing wacky things with a forcefield or something, and Captain America throwing his shield and punching people and Ant Man crawling into Iron Man's suit etc...
Seperately, their 'gifts' are rather quirky and ineffective. -It really was a mess when they used them against each other!

And that reminded me of the church!
We all have these gifts, and unless we work together as the body of Christ, they are just rather random. They are nothing compared to the coperate awesomeness of all of us being in unity!

And wasn't Burn so much like the devil?
He actually said that he knew he couldn't fight the Avengers himself. "Stronger men than me have tried. But I knew that if I got them to fight each other...."
How true is that statement.
The enemy can't defeat the church. "The gates of Hades will never prevail against it" but if he can get us to FIGHT EACH OTHER...
Then we are totally distracted from the mission at hand and are of no use to the world!

-That is what I think MY hero would've said. ; )

The day after Father's day

We were blessed to celebrate this wonderful man this weekend! It meant an especially great deal to us to after all he's been through this year!

And since teaching a Sunday school class and going to worship wears Hubby out and since we had some tired boys just returning from youth camp, we had our big celebration last night instead.

Uncle Phil is staying with us and Tiffany (our soon to be daughter) came, and so did Joel, who flew in for camp and considers us his 'second parents.' : ) It was a very nice evening.

The kids wrote Hubby the usual Father's Day letters but this year the overriding theme of them all was their thanks for the courage he exhibited to them through the cancer battle and the way that it impacted their lives!

Yes, and Amen!

So sweet!

Whenever this young man is around,
all doors are opened for me and I don't have anything to carry other than my purse!!! : )

He's such a sweetheart!

Hubby taught him well!
Love you, Andrew!

A Banner Day for the Fam

Our youngest son volunteered to teach the high school class at church yesterday!

So proud of Andrew!!!
Joy said he did an amazing job. Thank the Lord.

Sometime that morning, it hit us that with Hubby teaching his adult class, and Nathan teaching the teens at his church in CA, that made 3 guys in our family teaching God's word in churches yesterday! Yay! Beyond blessed that all of our kids love the word of God
and that I have a husband who made sure that they would all know how to teach it. : )

Their favorite things about Dad

For a Father's Day project, I asked our kids to tell me some of their FAVORITE things about their Dad.
When we read back over the complied list, Andrew said, "Anyone with this many good things, is like the perfect man, Mom. You are really lucky." : )
Yes, I am!!! (and so are our kids!) Thank you, Jesus!

Here are some of them:

Dad's optimism about absolutely everything

Dad is a great father and there aren't very many of
those around these days

That Dad introduced me to an instrument-the guitar

Dad's generosity

Dad's positive outlook and attitude -always!

Dad's good judgment

How encouraging he is to us

His servant's heart

His wise words on every subject. He knows about everything!

That Dad cares about things we care about and he gets excited with us.

Dad's knowledge of the Bible

He always compliments me

His work ethic

That you can always depend on him

Dad is always willing to hear you.

You can ask always ask him questions

He can go into any social environment and talk to anyone!

Happy Father's Day to my wonderful Hubby!

Purity rings and things

When our kids turn sixteen we give them a purity ring or thing of their choice. We are now on our 3rd 16 year old!

Son #1 didn't actually choose a ring, he chose a compass! He likes to keep things low key and jewelry is not his thing. We had it engraved with a verse. Hubby loves the spiritual significance of a compass. He'd love to buy them all compasses! ; )

Son #2 decided to 'go big' and chose a real wedding band! He was so enthusiastic about wearing a purity ring that it couldn't be just any purity ring. It had to be the real thing!

Our daughter, has decided on a ring. It is from the Lord of the Rings movies. No, it is not the 'ring of power!' LOL

It is the ring that Galadriel wore. She was the elven queen.

Here it is:

The ring is described online as "geeky but elegant." A very cute description that she decided fits her perfectly.

(cute how their choices reflect something about them)

I had a purity symbol, too. Mine was a necklace that a preacher and his wife gave me. The charm was a heart cut in half that I wore and they saved the other half then gave it to my hubby on our wedding day. I had fun showing it to our daughter tonight.

May the Lord help all four of them to strive for purity and reap the continued blessings it brings.

Celebrating Dad!

The day started out with 4 teens, getting up at 7:00 AM on a Sunday (you know you are loved when that happens -lol) and making Dad breakfast! You have to get up early if you are going to bless a morning guy who loves to jump out of bed at 6:00 AM on the weekends. (have I mentioned that we are opposites?) : )

They went all out making him a breakfast burrito bar with all kinds of fixings like: sausage, bacon, eggs, cheese and diced peppers to put inside. There were even pancakes on the side. There were homemade cards/letters and some coffee related gifts. The big surprise that we were all excited about was a new (but not exactly) FISH TANK.

In 2006, hubby kept saying that a fist tank would be the perfect thing to make our living room relaxing, so that was what we got him for Father's Day. You can read about the hurricane that helped us put awesome rocks in it and all the fun here.

Over the years, we've given him more fish for Father's Day, because well, I guess we never decided who would actually do the feeding and they die. lol -Our fish have been fasting quite a lot lately. It is survival of the fittest around here and we have two extraordinary fish who have remained. The tank was also really green. -When people would come over and say "oh you have a fist tank" and walk that direction, we'd say "Um, actually we don't or we do, we just don't feed the fish and you definitely don't want to look at it." : ) All that to say, we think we haven't thoroughly cleaned it out in a few YEARS. So, we decided to redo the tank for him. It took pretty much all day! Bless the boys heart, they spent about two hours and a whole lot of elbow grease scrubbing it out in the front yard. Lots of work, but by 4 o'clock or so, we had all the 'fish' stuff put away and the tank set up with new water, live plants and new fish. (and I the pet store had a fist sale!) The plan was to keep the light off and hope he wouldn't notice the tank until Father's Day. But it looked SOOO much better that even with the light off, he was sure to notice! -Or you could say, that it had looked so bad even with the light off, he was sure to notice. lol! So, the kids covered it up with a white board that said Happy Father's Day and told him they were getting excited about the holiday early. And it worked!
He was very surprised at the unveiling that morning and very happy! He EVEN fed them. lol -One of us is going to have to keep doing that. : )

We went to church and weren't hungry for lunch after that big breakfast, sooo Dad's Day lunch turned out to be dinner. It was Chinese, of course. I'm a picky Chinese eater at best, and I couldn't talk anyone into Panda Express, lol so I was WAY out of my comfort zone. I reminded my hubby that 'I'm Andrew all grown up" -meaning PICKY eater in the extreme. I ended up getting chicken lettuce wraps, which I had to wrap myself and the meat looked so weird, but they were pretty good. Hubby finished them for me and that made the fact that his fortune cookie said "He who grabs the last lettuce wrap is the least hungry" funny and appropriate.

It was a great day, celebrating a great, godly man who makes our world go round! And if 'a picture says a thousand words' then I just sum it up with this:

Great old movie

Andrew had to watch this movie for school and he and I LOVED it.  It is based on the book by Rudyard Kipling.

Usually he turns his nose up at "black and whites" : )
but he really liked this one and I think it will be a family favorite.

I love movies that bring out the importance of fatherhood.
The boy in this movie is very spoiled and tries to bribe a student and a teacher at school.
When the head master talks to his father about it, he tells him that if he "will only let the boy spend time with you, we will be very likely to have another splendid citizen on our hands." So sweet and true. -How many men in society need to hear that today!
The father humbly receives this advice and decides to spend more time with his son because "apparently boys can't raise themselves." -NO, they couldn't back then and they can't today.
His father doesn't end up being the one to help his son become a young man of character but someone else does and it is fun to watch.
Enjoy! : )

Legoland Florida -in pictures!

I thought it would be crowded since a thousand homeschoolers were signed up to go, but since the rest of the world was in school, it wasn't! They were able to ride all the roller coasters over and over and they had a blast! : )

Father's day fun

My hubby's best friend bought us all tickets to the Ray's game to celebrate Father's Day!

I thought it would be kind of dull like it is on TV and last for 5 hours so I actually thought about bringing a book. (too funny!)

But I was wrong on both counts.

1. It is football games that last for 3 but totally feels like 5! ; )
2. Baseball in person is not a bit dull!

We got to see the Rays play the Marlins. It was SOOOO much fun!

Because our pitcher got 10 strike outs, everyone who went to Kane's Furniture got a coupon for a free medium pizza from Papa John's! And since we had 6 tickets, that was 6 pizzas. (after driving all over creation to the Kane's and then to find a Papa John's that is!)
But ya can't beat a free dinner (& leftovers) after the game!

Guess what? The cameras (wherever they were) zoomed in on our family and we were on the big huge mega tron screens! Wow!!!! It is funny to be watching the screens and then realize that you are seeing people in your own family!

For some reason Rays fans ring cowbells. (if you know why, let me know! And while you are at it, please tell me what creature our furry mascot is, I'm stumped!)

I was pretty sure that sitting in front of a two year old with a cowbell was not going to be
too fun, lol but thankfully, he got bored with it pretty quick. At one point, he came flying over the seat next to me and was caught by the lady one seat over. Her great reflexes kept that little fan from landing on his head! (I'm amazed that someone would bring such a little guy and then get mad at him for "not watching the game." Good grief!)
Next, the elderly lady in front of me had to be carried away by medics out of the stadium! She had a really weak pulse and was sweating profusely. (in the air conditioning)

So, like I said, baseball in person isn't a bit boring! -And the game wasn't bad either! LOL!
We won! 2 to 1! Hooray! And did I mention the free pizza!

Such a fun Father's Day! -And no one loved it more than a certain major Rays fan that I'm in love with!

Two of the best dads

My hubby says that one of the things that struck him about me while we were dating was seeing me sitting on my dad's lap while he was over at our house chatting with our family.

He says that it made him stop and wonder what kind of a wife a daddy's girl would make. He wasn't sure but he thought that a girl who loved and honored her dad seemed like someone who would love and honor her husband.

Guess what?

He says it did work out that way. : ) Hooray!

-Now he's got his own daddy's girl and three boys who are crazy about him!

(Happy Father's Day, Honey!)

Let me tell you, I have one sweet Dad that I've always been crazy about!

Happy Father's Day, Dad! I love you! : )

This Weekend, I...

-Finished my term as the president and treasurer of our home school group and had fun passing out the yearbooks

-Got my first lesson on couponing and how to use thegrocerygame.com. Hoping to become a coupon queen and save gobs of money

-Started watching LOST for the first time by streaming season 1 on Net flix (you don't want to know what episode we are on already because it is scary)

-Helped one of my boys get all packed for a youth camp that he's going to in TX with my best friend's family. Managed to get all his things in a carry-on and avoid the $25 luggage fee. yay!

-Made our favorite meal, fettuccine alfredo with chicken and sun-dried tomatoes and had our boys best friends over for dinner and to spend the night

-Said 'good-bye' and prayed for Nate as we all headed off to church while he and Dad headed to the airport

-Heard an awesome sermon on the sovereignty of God which HELPED SO MUCH when I thought about Nathan flying alone and then when a delay and a gate change made him miss his connecting flight and left him sitting in Memphis alone for 7 hrs!

-Took my wonderful hubby out for Chinese food for Father's Day and realized we don't have a single kiddo who can get the "Age 10 and under" price anymore. Boo-hoo! ; )

-Watched more LOST and talked to a bored and sad sounding Nathan as he sat in Memphis forever and a day.

-Talked to my sweet Dad on the phone and got excited about our trip to CA in August!

-Watched more LOST and worried about Nathan

-Got a call from a VERY HAPPY Nathan at 11:00 PM who was safe and sound in TX with our wonderful friends! He said the trip got even more exciting when he was flying through a storm and felt like he was apart of the movie "The Day after Tomorrow."

-Told the rest of our kids that they are never flying anywhere alone (LOL!) and I went to bed, greatly relieved!

The End! : )

In defense of Michael Pearl

...even though I know he doesn't need my help. : )

First, I have to say that my hubby and I are big fans of the Pearls. We love their magazine!
-When our friend did an amazing bathroom remodel for us, my hubby made sure to have a magazine holder made just for our No Greater Joy magazines! Now that is saying something! LOL

Our family doesn't resemble their typical fans...
We live in the city, attend a big church, let our kids be involved in a youth ministry and we read the NKJ and the NIV versions of the Bible....to name a few differences. Obviously, we don't agree on everything. But their child training books changed our parenting and continue to bless our family!
(and don't even get me started on how great Debi's book "Created to be his Helpmeet" is! Every woman should read it)

Anyway, we have learned some invaluable lessons about 'tying strings' and delighting in our children that totally changed our way of parenting and gave us all more joy.
This article sums up what I love about what their books teach and it works!

I was so grieved to hear that someone who read one of their books, beat their child to death and I was even more grieved to learn that the media blamed it on Michael Pearl. That is the craziest thing ever. Why blame an author because someone read his book and did the opposite of what it said?! Don't we all have free choice?

I like what Mike said here:
"If a man leaves an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and gets drunk, do you blame the twelve step program? If a man under psychiatric care commits a heinous crime, do we charge the psychiatrist? If a teen kills himself in an auto accident after taking drivers ed at school, do we stop the program? When an angry, abusive parent recognizes his need to reform and seeks help through our material, but lapses back into his predisposed habits, injuring his children yet again, is our material that teaches caution and moderation to blame?"

Most certainly not would be my answer.

Go here for the whole article.

Another Father Daughter Dance

Here is a poem about one of the big topics around our house this week:

There once was a girl who was three
who went to a dance with her daddy

She had no desire to go
She didn't like her gorgeous dress, don't ya know

Her mommy thought it was too cute to miss
Her mommy was in definite BLISS

A nap was missed and tears were shed
The little girl went to the daddy daughter dance but with dread

Cute pictures were taken
And food and cake were eaten

The little girl and her daddy had a nice time
And mommy thought it was all just sublime

Now the girl is thirteen
And sweet as she can be

But there is another daddy daughter dance in view
And the girl says that even though that is true

She's done that before
And can live without more

Although her mom has tried
And even bribed...

Dresses and dancing are not what is in store
For this girl who wants to someday minister on a foreign shore

But she would love to go and serve the cake
And help her mom decorate!

I love you, Joy!

who knows that poetry is not her thing! lol

Only really awesome daddys learn to knit

My sweet hubby likes to find ways to connect with each of our kids in the evenings whenever he can. So, he gets into whatever they are into.
(guitar, drumming, video editing etc) A long time ago he decided that during these child-raising years he was not going to pursue hobbies of his own, but be apart of theirs. He's such a good dad!

And that is why he has asked Joy to teach him to KNIT.
Thankfully, the Knifty Knitter looms make it really easy and fun.

It sounds a little funny to hear him saying things like
"After dinner, Joy and I are going to knit." ~I kind of do a double take every time he says it. ; )
But what is funnier... is when he says
"Joy, let's go build a hat." lol

What a wonderful guy!

Sweet Encouragement

This blessed me!

Andrew said "Mom, when I am 23, I am going to call you and dad and ask you how you raised us because you guys did a great job and I'm going to need some guidance for my family."
How sweet is that?! (pinch me!) : )
I love 10 year olds!
